About Washington, Virginia

Historic Washington Virginia is known as “the first Washington of them all”. The town itself was surveyed by George Washington in 1749. At age 17, George Washington designed the town's small urban plan and named all the streets. That same plan remains today in a charming historic village that is home to fine dining, theatres, galleries, lodging and eclectic retail.

Located in the center of town is the world-famous Inn at Little Washington restaurant. This internationally renowned culinary destination is just steps away from The White Moose Inn (circa 1834).

Beyond the town of Little Washington, there are many activities in beautiful Rappahannock County. Just ten minutes by car from The White Moose Inn is the historic village of Sperryville (circa 1858). In Sperryville, you will find the Copper Fox Distillery, Central Coffee Roasters, Haley Fine Arts Gallery, several craft breweries, multiple restaurants, antiques and even an executive par three golf course.

Just ten more minutes beyond Sperryville is the panorama entrance to Shenandoah National Park and direct access to Skyline Drive. Once in the park there is abundant hiking and horseback riding with popular trails such as Old Rag Mountain, the White Oak Canyon waterfalls and the Thornton River Trail.

All throughout the county there are rivers for fly fishing, abundant local wineries for wine tastings, artisan trails, organic farm tours, and so much more. Depending on the time of year, there are hunt races, steeple chases, the month long Castleton Music Festival, Bluegrass Festivals, film festivals, and a variety of cultural activities.

Whether in the mood for fine dining, something casual, or anything in between, Little Washington's diverse culinary scene features some of the country's most unique and delicious cuisines that can delight all palates. Learn more about the area's most delightful restaurants.
